Conclusion
Throughout modern history, the predominant model of post-secondary education has featured a knowledgeable instructor lecturing students in a physical classroom. Today, the impacts of information and communication technologies are challenging nearly every tenet of post secondary education. “Net-geners” are leaning on a new institution to acquire their knowledge, to collaborate and learn: the internet.
In today’s world, the need for flexible, engaged teaching and learning, whether face to face or online, matters more than ever. As technologies and instructional design competencies are emerging and improving, the organic and authentic experience of teaching and learning that takes place in a classroom seems to be actually increasing in importance. Classroom participation allows students to further develop active listening, problem solving and interpersonal communication skills. They also have opportunities to observe, critically reflect and connect with their peers in a spontaneous way. Technology cannot replicate the human spirit of the engaged instructor who both inspires and guides students through their learning experience. Using innovative technology as a way to create rich, diverse skills with instructors as guides, students will be equipped with the knowledge, resources and supports needed to be successful both in the classroom and beyond.
